Although most mothers will never get pain linked to breastfeeding, bad posture or low colostrum (the first type of mother’s milk) can cause cracking around the nipple, and therefore more or less sharp pain. Carole Hervé, lactation consultant, explained it to us:

Why can breastfeeding cause pain?

“In the days following birth, mothers have skin that is naturally much more stretched out than it is normally. When the baby suckles, it pulls the nipple to 200% of its original size, and the nipple is squeezed between its hard and soft palate. However, sometimes the baby can be a bit awkward and it can be hard to position yourself for it, so if your skin is naturally a bit dry well it will tend to slightly tear.”

When should you use a nursing balm?

“Some micro-cracks are extremely painful, so what moms will do is apply colostrum or even a little bit of milk, when they start producing it. If they don’t have enough, they can use a thick ointment. They can use a nursing balm with very limited ingredients, that is applied on the surface in very limited amounts. It will soak into the skin and make it more supple, so the skin will become much more stretchy. When the baby suckles, when it pulls on the nipple, the skin will be less susceptible to tearing. The nursing balm should also be something nourishing, sometimes applied preventively, just because you want to take care of yourself.”

When should you apply the nursing balm?

“In the days that follow birth, until the time the mother feels that the skin has been stretched. The first thing she should do is to apply milk, and secondly, if she doesn’t have enough, she should apply an oily balm, that is edible for her baby. Not as a thick layer, but as a really thin layer on the nipple and areola that will moisturize them well, soften them, and enable the baby to suckle without breaking the skin.”

Understand that the solution is not to stop breastfeeding. The solution is to find a better posture and soften one’s skin with a rich balm because it will be stretched regularly. Thus it is the combination of careful attention to posture and the application of a nursing balm that will enable frequent breastfeeding, in turn enabling the baby to improve its technique and make cracking go away.
