Understanding the Effect of Cold Weather on Your Body
In the winter, low temperatures force the body to redirect blood toward vital organs to maintain optimal function. By doing so, all the small veins in the skin and the extremities receive less blood. This limited blood supply means less oxygen and reduced hydration.
Furthermore, going back and forth from warm to chilly temperatures indoors and out weakens the acid mantle of the epidermis. This protective mantle is composed of sweat, sebum, and water. It acts as a barrier enabling the skin to stay supple and to maintain hydration levels. When it is warm inside, the water in the acid mantle evaporates. When you go out into the cold, the acid mantle does not have the time to adapt progressively to the environment. The resulting absence of water causes the skin to dry out. When you are warm inside, the water in the acid mantle evaporates. Then, when you go out into the cold, the weakened acid mantle does not have the time to adapt and can react badly, damaging itself and causing the skin to dry. This reaction is sensations of tightness, itching, or peeling, and your lips and hands are the first to face the consequences.
